Another winter weather event is on the horizon for Friday night into Saturday, with a potential, but highly uncertain, system possible Sunday.
Friday Night System:
Moisture will move into the region Friday night, likely beginning as rain before quickly transitioning to snow, especially across Southwest Virginia and Eastern Kentucky, where the best chance for accumulating snow exists. While this will be a fast-moving system, snowfall rates could become moderate to heavy at times, allowing for quick accumulations.
Southwest Virginia & Eastern Kentucky:
1–2 inches possible across much of the area, with isolated 3-inch amount possible
Tri-Cities and Northeast Tennessee:
After the rain-to-snow transition, anything from a trace to 1 inch is possible.
Given the potential impacts, Winter Weather Advisories may be needed for parts of Eastern Kentucky and Southwest Virginia. Forecast details will continue to be refined today and tomorrow as models come into better agreement.
Looking Ahead to Sunday:
Another storm system is expected to track somewhere near the coast, but confidence is very low on exact placement and impacts. If the track is favorable, accumulating snow could be possible areawide, but details remain VERY UNCERTAIN at this time. Continue checking back for updates and avoid social media hype.
