Accumulating snow is expected in the Tri-Cities Friday afternoon through Saturday night.
Snow totals have increased for some areas, including parts of the Tri-Cities metro, and timing has been slightly adjusted. We now expect snow to begin moving into the region Friday morning and continue through Saturday night.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for most of the area. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Eastern Kentucky, where most snow totals are expected to remain under 4 inches.
❄️ TIMING:
Snow could begin in far northern Southwest Virginia between 8–10 AM Friday.
Snow will then push south through the morning and early afternoon.
The Tri-Cities metro could see snow as early as late morning, but especially after 1 PM.
Snow will gradually taper off late Saturday afternoon through Saturday evening, ending from northwest to southeast.
📊 SNOWFALL AMOUNTS:
Snowfall totals have trended upward:
6–9 inches: Parts of the Tri-Cities metro mainly east of I-81 including Abingdon, Bristol, Elizabethton, Greeneville, and Johnson City.
3–6 inches: Mainly west of I-81 including, Gate City, Kingsport, Norton, Rogersville, and Sneedville.
2–4 inches: Most of Eastern Kentucky.
8–12 inches possible: Tennessee/North Carolina mountains.
⚠️ IMPACTS:
Hazardous travel expected beginning Friday afternoon.
Snow will be light and fluffy, keeping the power outage threat low, but not zero due to gusty winds.
Blowing snow and reduced visibility will be possible at times.
Many school schedule changes have already been added to our school closings post, which is pinned to the top of our page and will be updated through the night and Friday morning.
TEMPERATURES & COLD IMPACTS:
